Officially known as Pura Luhur Uluwatu (yes, that’s the real name: “Luhur” means “something of divine origin” while “Uluwatu” can be broken into “ulu” which means “head or top’s end” and “watu” means “rock” in the old language). Nonetheless, merely mentioning Uluwatu will get you here in no time.

Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu) is one of Bali’s nine key temples (the Kayangan Jagat – Bali directional temples), located on the southern tip of Bali in Badung Regency. The Uluwatu temple guards Bali from evil spirits from the SW, in which dwell major deities. For Uluwatu it’s Bhatara Rudra, God of the elements and of cosmic force majeure.

Most of Bali’s regencies have Pura Luhur which become the focus for massive pilgrimages during three or five day odalan anniversaries. The photogenic Tanah Lot and the Bat Cave temple, Goa Lawah, is also Pura Luhur. All Pura Luhur have inspiring locations, overlooking large bodies of water.

This is a popular place to enjoy the sunset. The views from Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple are best enjoyed on two different vantage points on both northern and southern portions of the area. Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple is inhabited by large number of monkeys (precautionary signs have been put at a few places), who are extremely adept at snatching your belonging, including bags, cameras and eyeglasses. Keep a very close grip on all your belongings including eyeglasses if possible.

If you do have something taken, you can usually “make a deal” with the monkeys and exchange some fruit for your belongings. If you offer some locals or even the Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple priests a tip they will be happy to do keep the monkeys away from you.

Jimbaran Beach is the famous beach with white sand along the coastal and it is located in southern part of Bali.
